Just because something is a Sparklie does not mean it is not a Life & Death matter.
Zimmerman is a Life & Death Sparklie.
More than just Zimmerman's life is at stake. Played improperly (or properly, if you believe there are people who intend to start a Race War over this case) many other people may die. Fighters on both sides of the Race War that may be ignited, and those caught in the crossfire.
But, in the end, it is just a Sparklie.
Here's the latest escalation, and most of you have seen it from Drudge and elsewhere: Folks on Twitter and beyond are calling for Zimmerman to be hunted and killed.
Want to try an experiment? Try this: You sign on to your Twitter account and call for the killing of anyone. Anyone at all. Put a bounty on the head of a guy sitting on death row, and see how long it takes you to be indicted.
But we all know there is no such thing as Rule of Law today. Law is merely a tool to be used for gain and advantage. I promise you this: If you are targeted for a trip into the grinder that is our current legal system, you will not come out unchanged. And the odds of your being victorious are minimal.
Was Zimmerman justified in approaching Martin in the first place? I know if I were out walking in a place where I was entitled to be and I was confronted by a Neighborhood Watch, I'd be hard-pressed to give him anything more than a derisive dismissal. I might even offer him some advice about where to go and how to get there.
Did Zimmerman create the confrontation? Did Martin instigate?
I don't know. I wasn't there.
I do know that even with my experience, if I get into a brawl with a 17 year-old who is taller, heavier and stronger than me, I'll probably end up with a few boo-boos & owies even if I win, just as Zimmerman had a few. Getting dinged up does not tell the story of who started what.
But facts do not matter now. Facts have not mattered since the moment political animals decided there was benefit in charging Zimmerman.
Now, he has a bounty on his head, legal bills he can't afford, is in hiding, has to live with the fact that his loved-ones are also being targeted, has been ordered defenseless by the Court, even though he remains an innocent man, oh, and let's not forget that he will be going on trial for his life.
Facts do not matter.
Smug players in this game have already rationalized what they are doing. Some possibly think this is how Justice works. Others shrug and content themselves with logic like this: "It's OK to put him on trial, even if we don't think there is a legal justification. When it's all over, even though he's been trashed in the media, financially wrecked, and his life placed in jeopardy, he'll get a book deal and be rich forever! The lucky bastard!"
I have heard that logic more often than I care to remember.
Just remember, Patriots: Nothing stops them from doing the same to you, whenever they choose.
That's the reality. I know it, because I have lived it.
There is no Rule of Law.
TEOTWAWKI is imminent. While the world will not end, it will end as it exists now.
