Wanna watch an ammo manufacturer brain-fart?

A few months ago I wrote a few companies that are known for turning out high-quality .308 ammunition.

My query was simple: What round/load do you offer that you would recommend for a .308 rifle with a 16" barrel for the best self-defense characteristics at 300 yards or fewer?

Heh.  Brain farts.  One company rep wrote back "Under what scenario would you ever consider a .308 at 300 yards "self defense?"

I didn't bother to answer him.  ;)

  1. The most accurate factory round I've found out of my Socom is the 110 gr Hornady TAP. Haven't checked the velocity, but guessin' from the tables, it's around 2800 fps from the muxxle, and around 1850 at 300 mtrs, with excellent accuracy.

Indeed, and a poor salesman to boot.

  3. Damn, I guess I'm weird...I figure that if I require self-defense at less than 300 yards, then I must have made some mistake. Of course, not being perfect, I try to plan for such potential mistakes.

  4. K,
My first preference is the Hornady 168gr. A*Max BTBT #8096
Two very close second choices are:
    - Federal 168gr. Sierra Match King HPBT #GM308M
    - NATO M118 .308 Sniper HPBT

The Ballistic Tip or HPBT rounds will yield better terminal energy transfer at short range than an FMJ, but the fact is that, at <=300 meters, any NATO Spec. 147gr FMJ will do a very acceptable job. In that class, I have a preference for the German made "DM111 Weichkern" 200rd. battle packs - I have burned through dozens of these battle-packs, and have found the reliability and round-to-round consistency to be excellent.
