III Comms Course

Comms Course: April 4-6

III: This is a course you need under your belts, even if you are not "the comms guy".

Here is a short bullet list of topics to be covered - I think you'd be hard-pressed to locate another class covering the same relevant material to the III Patriot - anywhere.

Topics to be discussed will include:
  • Considerations for III%er/Grid-Down Communications
  • Equipment Selection
  • Improvised Antennas
  • Low Profile/Covert Operations
  • Basic Cryptographic Systems and Techniques
  • Non-Radio Communications Options
  • IFF (Identification Friend/Foe) and Interoperability System Considerations
  • Basic Improvised Surveillance/Security Systems – Off The Shelf Solutions
  • VHF/UHF Communications Monitoring/COMINT (Communications Intelligence)  Equipment and Systems
  • Basic COMINT and COMINT Analysis
Registration information is here.  The cost is beyond amazing, and you know you are learning from a genuine Professional.

Read this post as well.

  1. K,
Ran across something with potential a few days ago.

Now I was a little skeptical of this at first given that these guys are basically making gear for the airsoft community but I did some digging and their other radios have a very good reputation. They are a little pricey but they are waterproof /dustproof. Not sure how they stand up to shock but the PRC 152's that they make get really good reviews and stand up to abuse. The attraction for me was the manpack nature and the fact that there is nothing else to get unless you want options. You dont have to spend 600.00 on a Yaesu and then get an antenna, then get an antenna tuner, then a power supply. Then you have to figure out how to haul the thing around in a pack and really make it protable. This thing has it all rolled into one package and its not an old surplus unit that may or may not need repair. If this unit breaks its modern components that you can get and repair it yourself. (well I can anyway I did that for a living for a long time). I am contacting the guys who are building this thing and trying to get more info. They are in Taiwan so there are some barriers to get over. Will keep you posted.

  2. G1: Thanks. Let me know once you assess the radio if you think it has any real-world practical potential.

Thanks also for our earlier conversation. I am considering adding Airsoft to some of my CQB classes. (I often use Blue Gun Trainers, but I think a little sting may help drive my points home in some circumstances.)

I've scratched the surface on Airsoft guns, and I think gas driven blowbacks are the way to go (if one can believe the specs offered by the makers regarding range and accuracy). Can you steer me toward or away from brands? Brands WE, Tanaka and Maruzen have offerings I'd consider - any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    1. WE pistols are pretty good. As far as stay away from? Almost anything you see at the big box stores are a crap shoot for handguns. Stay away from the rifles in those store period. KWA makes a REAL nice Gas Blow back rifle in an AR and AK pattern. They are on the high end of cost but thats a good thing in this case. I have a CYMA AK that has been working very hard for the last 6 or 7 months that we have been running our classes. Its running just fine. More of an entry model gun buts its working. We think the addition of Airsoft to training is a really good thing. There are a lot of interesting things in that market to add to the realism...Like CO2 powered flashbang grenades. After running some CQB stacks on a door and tossing in that flashbang I can see how the asshole cops get addicted to it. Its a real adrenaline rush.

Will update you on the radios as soon as I get more info.
